アメリカ人アーティスト、アレクサンダー・コールダー（Alexander Calder）の作品集。本書は、作者の彫刻作品約300点を収録しており、その多くは刊行時に初めて公開されたものである。作者と親交のあった写真家・グラフィックデザイナーのハーバート・マター（Herbert Matter）は、彫刻作品の完成に至るまでのさまざまな段階を撮影し、アトリエでの制作風景やコネチカット州ロックスベリーの自宅での家族と過ごす様子を捉える機会に恵まれた。「コールダー財団（Calder Foundation）」の全面的な協力を得て出版された本書は、作者の作品と生涯、そして創造プロセスについて新しい視点を提供する。アメリカ人美術批評家であり、作者の伝記を書き下ろしたジェド・パール（Jed Perl）、コールダー財団理事長を務め、作者の孫であるアレクサンダー・S・C・ロウワー（Alexander C. Rower）やマターの教え子であり同僚でもあるジョン・T・ヒル（John T. Hill）によるエッセイも収録。

Calder by Matter contains approximately three hundred images of Alexander Calder’s sculptures, many of which are published here for the first time. Given unprecedented access to Calder’s work and life during the course of their friendship, acclaimed photographer and graphic designer Herbert Matter captured Calder’s sculptures at different stages of completion, as well as the artist at work in his studio and at home with his family in Roxbury, Connecticut. Published in direct collaboration with the Calder Foundation, Calder by Matter offers a new perspective on Calder’s oeuvre, life, and creative process.
